Research by design

Three methodological components drive the research: a referential component, a prospective component, and a comparative component. These three complementary modalities constitute the “research by design” approach, where the project process becomes a concrete research tool that lies between theoretical and operational issues. Thanks to the notion of integrated design, which aims to exploring unprecedented links between the methodological rigor of research and the inventiveness potential of the project, RHODANIE URBAINE clearly sees the project process as a knowledge production tool.

Project-based visions

The project-based visions aim for renewed interactions between the urban space and the river space, as well as satisfactory performance in terms of sustainability. To this end, they are based on low-carbon construction assumptions, resulting in sober and modular buildings. On each of the 4 rhodanian study sites – and in connection with the work carried out at the studio by the students – 3 project variants are developed in addition to the current situation, for a total of 16 visions. 3 prospective attitudes categorize the project-based visions. These relate to the specific contribution of the new neighborhood to the nature of the spatial relationships between the urban fabric of the existing city and the landscape area of the river.
